Protein-Free Hapten-Carbon Nanotube Constructs Induce the Secondary Immune Response
2017
Carbon nanotubes are novel technological tools with multiple applications. The interaction between such nanoparticles and living organisms is nowadays a matter of keen research by academic and private institutions. In this study, carbon nanotube constructs were investigated as delivery vehicles for immunostimulation and induction of the secondary immune response to a small organic molecule, namely, a hapten. Two types of nanoconstructs were prepared: on one hand, carbon nanotubes carrying a protein bioconjugate of a hapten covalently linked to the carbon surface, and on the other hand, covalent carbon nanotube constructs of the same model chemical compound without the carrier protein. Nanot…

Basalt Fibre Composite with Carbon Nanomodified Epoxy Matrix under Hydrothermal Ageing
2021
This work aimed to investigate the effect of hybrid carbon nanofillers (e.g., carbon nanotubes/carbon nanofibers in the ratio 1:1 by mass) over the electrical and flexural properties for an epoxy matrix and corresponding basalt fibre reinforcing composite (BFRC) subjected to full-year seasonal water absorption. Hydrothermal ageing was performed by full immersion of the tested materials into distilled water according to the following model conditions (seasons). The mechanical properties were measured in three-point bending mode before environmental ageing and after each season. Upon environmental ageing, the relative change of flexural strength and elastic modulus of the epoxy and NC was wit…
Hydrothermal Aging of an Epoxy Resin Filled with Carbon Nanofillers
2020
The effects of temperature and moisture on flexural and thermomechanical properties of neat and filled epoxy with both multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNT), carbon nanofibers (CNF), and their hybrid components were investigated. Two regimes of environmental aging were applied: Water absorption at 70 °
Calculations of organic-solvent dispersions of single-wall carbon nanotubes
2005
The aqueous solubility Sw and 1-octanol–(Po), cyclohexane–(Pch), and chloroform–(Pcf) water partition coefficients are calculated. The properties of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT) are related to the indices (n, m) designating the chiral vector. SWNTs are classified in zigzag (n, 0), armchair (n, n), and chiral (n, m). These properties permit classifying SWNTs according to (n, m). Correlations between (n2 + nm + m2)1/2, log Sw, log Po, log Pch, and log Pcf show that (n, m) are adequate indices. The (10,10) is the most abundant SWNT, presenting consistency between great kinetic stability, small Sw, and great {Po, Pch, Pcf}. The room temperature solubility of SWNTs is investigated in a va…
Diagnosis and Classification of 17 Diseases from 1404 Subjects via Pattern Analysis of Exhaled Molecules.
2016
We report on an artificially intelligent nanoarray based on molecularly modified gold nanoparticles and a random network of single-walled carbon nanotubes for noninvasive diagnosis and classification of a number of diseases from exhaled breath. The performance of this artificially intelligent nanoarray was clinically assessed on breath samples collected from 1404 subjects having one of 17 different disease conditions included in the study or having no evidence of any disease (healthy controls). Blind experiments showed that 86% accuracy could be achieved with the artificially intelligent nanoarray, allowing both detection and discrimination between the different disease conditions examined.…
Carbon nanotube-protein carriers enhance size-dependent self-adjuvant antibody response to haptens
2013
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are nanomaterials with interesting emerging applications. Their properties make CNTs excellent candidates for use as new nanovehicles in drug delivery, immunization and diagnostics. In the current study, we assessed the immune-response-amplifying properties of CNTs to haptens by using azoxystrobin, the first developed strobilurin fungicide, asamodel analyte. Anazoxystrobin derivative bearingacarboxylated spacer arm (hapten AZc6) was covalently coupled to bovine serum albumin (BSA), and the resulting BSA-AZc6 conjugate was covalently linked to four functionalized CNTs of different shapes and sizes, varying in diameter and length. These four types of CNT-based construc…
Density functional theory studies of OH-modified open-ended single-wall zigzag carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs)
2010
Abstract Functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are often formed as result of oxidation and cleaning of raw product grown on metal catalyst. Structure and energy of ideal and OH-modified single-wall nanotubes (SWCNTs) of different length (2.8, 7.0 and 13.5 A) were obtained at the DFT-B3LYP level. From one to nine OH groups were added at the end of the nanotube and a nonadditive dependence of attachment energy on the number of substituents was observed. The energetics of SWCNT end substitution with OH groups was supported by high level MP2 and CCSD(T) determination of reaction energy: R – H + 1 / 2 O 2 → R – OH + Δ E for methane, benzene and anthracene. In addition, a vibrational analysis of…
